Motion Propagation

The state of motiion is propagated from one body to another. We know the law of inertia or Newton's 1st law of motion which states that a body in motion tends to remain in motion or a body at rest tends to remain at rest unless an external force acts on it. Why this actually happens? Let's explain this in a better way which I think may be a better explanation.

A body continues its state of motion unless the change in motion is propagated to the whole body. For example, when we are travelling in a bus and suddenly the bus brakes, then everyone in the bus fall forward. This is due to inertia. And we will continue to fall forward unless the change in state of motion is propagated to our whole body from the bus. If we are sitting, then the propagation of state of motion takes place from the seat to our whole body. Since in a seat, major part of our body is in contact with the seat of the bus, so propagation of change in state of motion to our body takes less time. If a person standing in a bus will experience the effect of inertia more since only a few part of the body,i.e. only feet of the person is in contact with the bus. So, it takes more time for the propagation of state of motion to propagate to the whole body. Therefore the person standing in the bus fall forward more than the person sitting in the seat.

This propagation of state of motion to the body also depends in the type of the material that the motion is propagating. Propagation of motion is faster for the materials like metals. That is why most of the objects are made up of metals. Cars, bus, bike, etc. are made of materials which allow propagation of motion to be faster. We can just imagine the situation if a bus is made up of materials like paper where propagation of motion is much slower. Other factor where propagation of state of motion depends is mass. Mass is the measure of inertia. So is the propagation of state of motion. Propagation of the state of motion takes a little longer time for the objects having greater mass.

The effect of torque can also be explained due to propagation of state of motion. We know that we need to apply less force to rotate an object in its axis of rotation if the distance of the force we are applying is more from the axis of rotation. To explain this physically let us take the example of a door moving on its hinges. The axis of rotation of the door is in the state of rest. So the particles near the hinges also tend to remain in the state of rest then the particles far from the axis of rotation,i.e. state of rest is propagating. Therefore we need to apply less force for rotating when we apply the force far from the hinges. So this is the turning effect of force.

Most of the laws of nature can be explained with the propagation of state of motion.

  2. Sometimes the sole survivor of plane crash will be a small child. Adults have a larger mass which, combine with deceleration yields a deadly force. A child's lower mass helps reduce the force, even with the large deceleration. Nature can be kind sometimes.
